Food Diary User Manual

 
 

This manual is designed to help guide you through the Food Diary step by step. 

The first is the Food Diary welcoming you to the system.  Please note, you have the option to not have this greeting appear every time you start the Food Diary.

The second box is where you add yourself into the Food Diary.

After you click “Add User” you choose your user name and password.  As noted, should you choose not to utilize the password option for the Food Diary you can leave the boxes blank.

Should you choose the Password Option, there is an “Automatic Login” option located on the previous box of the Food Diary.  Just click the box to activate this option.

Once you have entered yourself into the Food Diary the Login Box will now appear as:

As you will note, the “Edit User” button is now enabled.  This will allow you to edit your User name should you decide to change it.  It will also allow you to add or change the password to the Food Diary.

 When you are ready to proceed, click “Login.”

 Step 7:

After you click the “Login” allowing you entry into the Food Diary you will see an instruction box.  Again, you have the option to click “Do Not Show Again” so the box will not appear every time you log into the Food Diary.

Once you either click “Dismiss” or “Do Not Show Again” buttons for the instruction box of the Food Diary, you will see a monthly calendar:

You also have the option to view by week:

The weekly view of the Food Diary appears as:

When you double click on a specific day, the Food Diary allows you to input the day’s events as seen below:

Step 8:

Begin by setting your caloric intake, to do this click on the “Set Caloric-Intake Budget” button in the Food Diary:

After you click the “Daily Caloric-Intake Budget” button a window will appear that gives you the option to fill in whatever amount you choose.

Next you want to set your exercise plan in the Food Diary, to do this click on the “Set Exercise Calorie Plan” button:

Just like before, a window will appear in the Food Diary this will allow you to set your total Weekly Exercised Caloric-Expenditure Plan.  In the box enter the number of calories you wish to burn per week.  Click close.

Next click the “Weight Loss Goal” button:

The Food Diary will then open up another window that will let you create you weight loss goal within the Food Diary.  To enter your new goal, click the “New Goal” button.

 The Food Diary will bring up a window that will let you “title” your new goal:

Click “Ok” for the Food Diary to accept the title of your goal.  You will now see that the Food Diary has accepted the name of your goal.

By clicking on the “View Goal” Food Diary will open up a window which will let you see your progress.  Enter your starting weight under the first calendar and your goal weight under the second calendar.

Select the date range by clicking the start date and end date.  The Food Diary will then calculate your progress:

For a more visual representation of your progress click on the “View Your Weight Loss Goal Progress” tab.

Continue by filling in your personal information in the Bodily Measurements.

The Ketosis section of the Bodily Measurements sections is for those of you who have diabetes.

Webster’s defines Ketosis as:

Function: noun
1 : an abnormal increase of ketone bodies in the body in conditions of reduced or disturbed carbohydrate metabolism (as in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus)

 

All measurements should be entered as inches. 

To get the Body Fat Percentage go to the top menu:

Select Analysis and scroll down to “Estimate Your Body Fat Percentage.” The following window will appear:

If you have questions on how to measure yourself to input the information in the Food Diary, click on the “Measuring Instructions” button and the following help window will appear to assist you.

Step 9:

Enter your food intake for the day(s) in chart show below:

Enter the time of your first meal:

Then Click Food Diary 

This will bring up the following window:

This will allow you to choose what food you have eaten for that meal, or you can create a “Custom Foods” group. 

This is done by clicking the “Your Custom Foods” option

Once you have clicked/highlighted this option.  Click on the “Add New Food” button

 This will bring up a window in the Food Diary which will let you enter the specifics of your meal.

Once you have entered all the specifics of your custom food click the “Apply” button. 

At any time you want to use your new custom food but want more or less of that item, click the “Edit Custom Food” button:

This will bring you back to the Custom Food Item, which will allow you to adjust the values for the Custom Food Item.

Click the “Delete Foods/Measures”

This will bring up a window which will let you make adjustments to the predefined list of foods and measurements provided by your Food Diary.

When you are ready to add the food to your menu/meal look to the bottom of the “Add Foods To Your Meal” page of the Food Diary you will see “Food Item Selected”

Highlight the measurement (as shown) then type in the number of servings and the Food Diary will do the calculations for you.  Click the “Add New Food”.

 After you have added all food items you want for the specific meal, off to the lower right hand of the screen you will see a pie chart.  This is measuring the Fats, Proteins, and Carbs of the selected food(s) for the meal.

For a more detailed description of the meal click “Show Entire Meal’s Values” it is important to remember when looking at this chart, it does scroll down to give you a full break down of your meal.

At the bottom of the window you a three tabbed section:  

Consumption Budget, this displays your Total Daily Caloric-Intake Budget, the Total Calories Consumed and the Calories Left to Consume.

Exercise Expenditure Plan, this displays the total calories you wish to burn, the amount of calories you have burned so far and the amount you have left.

The last tab is Comments.

This is for any notes you wish to make regarding your Consumption Budget or Exercise Expenditure Plan areas.

Should you ever want to jump days without having to switch back to the main calendar of the Food Diary, at the bottom of the page you will see a row of five buttons:

The first three, Previous, Today, Next.  By clicking the “Previous” button you will “jump” backward one day (or as many as you choose) and your Food Diary will reflect either the previous day’s values.  By clicking the “Next” you will advance a day at a time, allowing you to enter values for any future dates. 

The “Days’ Complete Nutritional Values” button will bring up the Complete Nutrients Chart. 

The “Calendar View” will take you back to the calendar view of the current of the Food Diary. 

Step 10:

Enter your Exercise(s) you plan to do for the day.  To do this click on the Exercise tab in the Food Diary and then click on “Add Exercise” as pictured below:

If you have not entered your Bodily Measurements in the Food Diary for the day, and you try to add an exercise you will receive the following error window:

If you are entering your exercises for a new day and forgot to enter your Bodily Measurements in the Food Diary, you can simply click “Copy Yesterday’s Bodily Measurements” and the Food Diary will enter the values from the previous day.

Once you have completed that step, you can go ahead and click on the “Add Exercise” button.  This will bring up a menu of exercises.

When you see the exercise on the list, double click it and it will appear in the text box.  For the “Duration” text box you must enter the time value as minutes.  i.e... One hour = 60 minutes, Two hours = 120 minutes.  The Calories are automatically calculated by the Food Diary.

Step 11:

After completing the Exercise step, you can enter your medical information by clicking on the “Medical” tab.

The “Blood Sugar Value” and “Insulin Dosage” boxes apply only to those with diabetes. 

i.e. . . If you happen to be diabetic you would input your Blood Sugar for that time of day and the amount of insulin.  You can utilize this is another way to record your Blood Sugar and Insulin intake.

The “Blood Pressure” boxes are for the systolic and diastolic numbers:

The first box is for the “top” number, the systolic blood pressure reading.  This represents the maximum pressure exerted when the heart contracts.

The second box is for the “second” number, the diastolic blood pressure reading.  This represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest.

The “Heart Rate” box is for you to input your heart rate:

It will be up to you whether you want to put your resting heart rate or your rate after you are done with your work out.  Either way, to obtain your heart rate for the Food Diary, find your pulse on your wrist or neck and count the beats for 30 seconds and double the number you get.  That is your heart rate.

Should you need to record anything down for the day any snacks that you forgot to record or what heart rate you chose to enter in the Food Diary make a note in the “Comments” section:

 Step 12:

Check your progress with Food Diary by clicking the “Graphs” button.

After clicking the “Graphs” button in the Food Diary you will get a window with two calendars.  One asking for the start date of the time frame you want to see and one with the end date:

 When you see the two calendars the current day will be “outlined” with a blue box.  Do not mistake this for one of the days you wish to graph.  This only shows you the current day. 

To mark the start and end dates simply click on the date you wish to begin and end on in each respective calendars.  The dates you mark for those dates will be highlighted in a light blue color, indicating that they are correctly marked for the graph.

Under the “Graph Series” heading click the boxes next to what you want to graph.

When you have checked all the options you wish to graph click the graph button:

Once you have clicked the “Graph” button a color coded graph will appear:

By clicking on the “3D” button, you can switch the view output of the graph:

To switch back to the 3D if that is easier for you to view, simply click the “3D” button once again and the view will switch back.

Click on the “Rotating Arrows” button:

This allows you to rotate the graph by clicking and holding down the mouse on the graph, switching the view of the graph to a view which may be easier for you to read.

You can also print out the graphs by clicking on the “Printer” icon:

By printing out the graphs from the Food Diary, you will be able to keep a visual hard copy record as well as repeating the steps of the graph to see your progress. 

Step 13:

Another way the Food Diary tracks your progress is through the “Analysis Reports”

By clicking the “Analysis Reports” buttons, Food Diary will bring up the following screen:

 As with the “Daily Graphs” select the start date one the first calendar and the end date of the time frame you wish to see on the second calendar then click “Generate Report.

Once you click on the “Generate Report” button, Food Diary shows your daily breakdown of the days selected.

Clicking the “Print Analysis” button will generate a ‘printer friendly’ version of the report.

 The window will allow you to expand it to full screen or you can click the “Magnify” button to enlarge the report.

Step 14:

Printing your reports is as simple as clicking the “Print Reports” button.

 Food Diary will then bring up a window that will allow you to generate reports to any specific time period(s) of your choosing.

As you will note off to the top right there is a “Sections To Print.” This feature will allow you to generate individual reports for each item selected or you can generate them all at once.

Again, you have the option to enlarge the report for easier “On Screen” viewing by clicking the “Magnify” button.

 

It is important to note that when the reports are generated, they are generated for each day of the time frame you selected.  To view the report(s) for each day click the arrow button:

Step 15:

When you are finished entering your information into Food Diary for the day, click “Logout.”

Once you click “Logout” the “Login” screen will appear, indicating that you have successfully logged out of Food Diary.  When the window appears, click on the “Close” button and the program will exit.

 Should you ever click on the “Do Not Show Again” button:

 Either by accident or on purpose and wish to see the window again click on the “Help” and click on “Enable All Help Messages” and the help windows will open once again.
