Knowing your body fat percentage is very important because while losing fat-weight during exercise, you gain muscle weight.  Gaining muscle weight is good.  Losing fat-weight is also good.  However, if you lose (fat) weight and gain (muscle) weight that your total body weight does not change that much although you may become considerable more fit.

How much of your body weight comes from fat and how much from lean muscle? This scale lets you know so that you can make choices to improve and monitor your health. Tanita has patented a precise, easy way to use the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) method at home. Simply enter your personal data using the ‘set,’ ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons, and then stand barefoot on the scale. Electrodes in the foot sensor pads send a low-level electrical current through the body which measures the percentage of body fat. How? The current passes quickly through muscle and is slowed by fat.

Up to four users can program the scale with the following personal data: age, height, male, male athlete, female, female athlete, and activity level (1: little or no exercise; 3: intense physical activity). A switch on the back lets the user choose metric, imperial, or stones/pounds. The two-line digital display shows weight followed by body fat percentage, and except in athlete mode, lets you know if you are under-fat, healthy, over-fat, or obese. It will also tell you how many calories to consume in order to maintain your weight. Adjust accordingly if you’re trying to lose! A chart included in the instruction booklet shows appropriate ranges of fat percentage for age and gender. Four numbered tabs are located on the front edge of the scale, so that person number 1 lightly kicks tab number 1 with a big toe to activate his or her stored data. After the current reading, the ‘up’ button may be pressed and held to recall the previous reading for comparison. An additional weight-only tab provides a quick weight check, and a ‘guest’ button allows readings without reprogramming a personal tab. The weight capacity of this scale is 330 pounds (150 kilograms; 23 stones/8 pounds).

The scale, dark gray with metallic accents, measures 11-1/2 by 12 by 2 inches and should be used on a hard, level, dry floor. Four AA batteries (included) are required for operation. The monitor is intended for adults (up to age 99) and children (age 7 and older) who lead inactive or moderately active lifestyles, as well as athletic adults. The body fat monitor is not intended for use by pregnant women, people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic medical devices, professional athletes, or bodybuilders. Body fat percentage estimates may vary from day to day due to hydration changes from alcohol consumption, menstruation, illness, and other such factors. Readings taken at the same time everyday under consistent conditions will be most accurate. Tanita covers this scale with a three-year warranty.

Tanita's family model include an abundance of helpful innovations for weight and body fat management. These features include memory for up to four features: athletic mode, a healthy range indicator, body fat and weight recall, as well as a weight-only mode.
